Meta To Layoff 4000 Employees Months After Laying Off 11,000

April 27, 2023

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and other social media platforms, is set to lay off around 4,000 employees in a significant downsizing effort that will affect not only Facebook but also other Meta-owned platforms such as Instagram, Reality Labs, and WhatsApp. The decision follows Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's announcement in March that the company would reduce its workforce by an additional 10,000 jobs, on top of the 11,000 job cuts already implemented in November 2022. It is unclear which African countries will be affected by the layoff, although Meta has offices in South Africa and Nigeria. The notice of the layoff will be communicated via email, leaving employees uncertain and anxious. Meta also plans to implement another round of cuts in May that will affect the business side of the company. The downsizing is part of Zuckerberg's vision for a "year of efficiency" in 2023, which includes flattening organizational structures, canceling lower-priority projects, and reducing hiring rates.
